Your Campus - SAE Melbourne
Located on the South Coast of Australia, Melbourne is the second largest city on the continent and is widely regarded as the arts, sports and cultural hub of the nation. Students arriving from interstate or overseas are usually struck by the European flavor of the city and plethora of cultural events taking place year round.
Temperate summers (15 – 35 ˚c) and cool winters (6 – 13 ˚c) make Melbourne a city of seasons where the inhabitants alternate between a stereotypical Australian summer lifestyle of sun and outdoors activities through to a cozy café lifestyle, log fires and skiing a few hours drive north of the city in the depths of winter.
Melbourne is also a destination of choice due to the large amount of quality education options, both public and private, that are available. Long considered a “university town” Melbourne contains some of Australia’s most prestigious universities and as such is well equipped to handle students arriving to study.
Furthermore, Melbourne’s creative reputation makes it a centre for the creative media industries with approximately 50% of games development companies operating their offices out of Melbourne as well as a large proportion of animation and film/TV production companies. Although the SAE Institute Melbourne campus doesn’t provide accommodation for students, we have some great contacts to ensure students find the best possible accommodation for their needs during their stay in Melbourne. When students first arrive, they may initially wish to stay in a hotel, backpackers’ hostels, or nearby student-specific residences. Many students later decide to rent or share an apartment or house.
Below are some of the many options available. Please contact the accommodation services directly for more information about facilities, services and costs. We recommend maps.google.com.au to check out the location of these sites and their proximity to the campuses. For a full list of contacts of our recommended accommodation providers, see the Suggested Accommodation Options for Students table below.
Student Accommodation
AU$220–$560 per week
-
Unilodge provides student accommodation that is available to all students, regardless of the institution they decide to study at. Unilodge Melbourne is conveniently situated in various locations around the city area, and is also within close proximity to anything you could possibly need over the duration of your studies. For more information, visit www.unilodge.com.au/Melbourne
Homestay
AU$110–$270 per week
- Homestay is a great way for younger international students to immerse themselves in Australian life, and benefit from the safety and supervision of adults. Meals are usually included in the cost, but self-catering homestay is sometimes available. Check out www.homestaynetwork.com.au
Hostels and Guesthouses
AU$170–$500 per week
- Hostels are usually run by organisations such as Youth Hostels Australia Students usually share kitchen and bathroom facilities. In some cases rooms can be shared or you can opt to have your own room with an ensuite.
Shared Accommodation
AU$150–$700 per week
- Sharing off-campus accommodation is very popular with international students. You should look for advertisements on campus notice boards and in local newspapers. You should be prepared to provide your own furniture, as many housing options are not entirely specific to student needs. To search for shared accommodation online, try www.realestate.com.au/share, www.s-h-a.com.au, www.domain.com.au/share ,www.flatmates.com.au, and melbourne.gumtree.com.au
Rental Accommodation
AU$280+ per week
- When renting a house or apartment, landlords require rent to be paid in advance, and will require a security bond equal to one months' rent. Studios and one-bedroom apartments in Melbourne can be expensive, so shared accommodation is recommended. The campus is located close to the city centre and is easily accessable by public transport from many outer suburbs where accommodation may be cheaper. To search for rental properties online, check out www.realestate.com.au/rent and www.domain.com.au/rent
